SCUFFING

The disrupted appearance of an ink film as a result of abrasion to either the wet or dry ink film; or, the transfer of ink from one surface to another as a result of pressure and friction between them. Scuffing is commonly associated with dull or matte papers, but can usually be prevented by applying overprint varnish or coating. See also “burnishing” and “chalking”.
